Express Entry
Express Entry is the Government of Canada’s primary online system for managing applications for permanent residence from skilled workers. It is a points-based immigration pathway designed to identify candidates who are most likely to succeed economically in Canada.
The Express Entry system manages applications under three major federal immigration programs:
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – for individuals with skilled work experience in Canada
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) – for skilled professionals with foreign or Canadian work experience
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) – for individuals qualified in a skilled trade
How Express Entry Works
Individuals interested in immigrating to Canada through Express Entry must first create an online profile. This profile includes detailed information about their work experience, education, language proficiency (English and/or French), and other relevant qualifications.
Based on this information, candidates are assigned a score under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). They are then placed into a pool of applicants and ranked against others.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada conducts regular invitation rounds (draws), selecting candidates with the highest CRS scores. Those selected receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.
Once an ITA is issued, applicants must submit a complete application for permanent residence within the prescribed deadline, including all supporting documentation. If approved, applicants will either receive a permanent resident visa (if outside Canada) or confirmation of permanent residence (if already in Canada).
Why Express Entry Applications Are Refused
Despite being a streamlined system, Express Entry applications are frequently refused due to:
- Incomplete or inconsistent documentation
- Misrepresentation concerns
- Incorrect National Occupational Classification (NOC) selection
- Failure to meet program eligibility requirements
- Insufficient proof of work experience or language ability
Even minor errors can result in refusal or significant processing delays.
